Kansas & Colorado on the "I"

Nope - no Yellow Brick Road for us . . . Busting through Kansas on Interstate 70, we barely stopped to eat and sleep!

But here are some views from the navigators seat as we headed across the Great Central Plain, cruising on through the Sunflower State . . .
Of course - fields & fields of SUNFLOWERS!

Flat!
Wind turbine farm - GOOD, because they have plenty of wind!
Still plenty of cornfields, too - all kinds - brown, golden and green, spindly to lush and robust!  Other roadside scenes along the "I" included the usual collection of rustic old farm buildings, a smattering of oil pumping rigs, a single oil derrick, windmills and a few huge handmade signs telling us to "Don't miss" their unique roadside attraction.  We stopped at exactly none of these . . . not even the one that promised the "World's largest prairie dog and live 6-legged cow."  Imagine - Harold just drove right on by!

. . . and lots of sorghum (or is it maize?) too!
 Kansas IS very very flat!

After a few hundred miles of Kansas (422 to be exact) . .
. . . Colorado!
Going in from the east, a lot like Kansas!  Like Kansas, the landscape stretches out flat into eternity, but without the corn!  Now the flatness is covered with grazing land - and a few cattle scattered here and there.

And then - on the horizon - mountains!  From a distance we could see two big storm fronts looming above the Rockies.  Rolled right on through Denver as if it weren't even there and lucked out to squeeze between the two weather systems with barely a sprinkle on our windshield.

And now, THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS ! ! !

These are some totally awesome "piles of rocks" . . .

No photo I take with my little camera can do these monumental behemouths justice.  WOW!  But from these, I hope you can get the idea . . .

Nearer the western edge of the range is the indescribable, take-your-breath-away,  Glenwood Canyon . . .

Camped for the night at the beautiful No Name Rest Area, Exit 120!  Not quite through Colorful Colorado (as they call it).
Just a glimpse of the Colorado there behind us!

I'm going to "publish" this unfinished post right now while I have a connection!  We're headed tonight for Capitol Reef National Park and may not have internet, but  this is . . .
     . . . . to be continued.
